South Coast Trip

Berry

On Monday 8 October we journeyed by bus with the Avid Travel Club down the South Coast.  Our first stop was the beautiful town of Berry, one of my favourites.  It is located 145 km south of Sydney in the Shoalhaven region of New South Wales.  It has many historical buildings listed on the NSW Heritage Register.  There are many buildings with overhanging verandahs supported by verandah posts over the footpaths.  The weather was overcast but dry.

Berry is renowned for its restaurants, boutique shopping and great little cafes and food eateries.  Lots of coffee bars.  There's a pleasant vibe to the town with many tourists and local people meeting for a coffee and catch-up.

Many of the old buildings have been restored and now being used for other purposes than those for which they were built.  This lovely bank building stands at the corner of the main street on the left as you enter the town.

Monument to Alexander Berry, one of the founders of the town of Berry.  This statue stands at the entrance to the town.
An old horse trough in one of the streets at the entrance to the town.  These were built for the refreshment of horses in the old days before motor cars.

I am fond of Berry. My husband bought me a pair of ceramic chooks from one of the gifts shops there - I love them.

Berry is now a lot more user friendly as the traffic has been diverted around the town and only local traffic drives down the main street. It is much easier to cross the road and not have to worry about those heavy trucks thundering through the town.
